‘Nausicaä’s Laboratory’ is based on a scene from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. In this beautiful film, the world is covered with deadly spores that release poison into the air. The spores are of varying sizes, but are spherical and soft and are deceptively pretty. Nausicaä is the Princess of a town, born with a connection and innate understanding of the natural world. She befriends wild creatures and flies effortlessly on the wind with her glider. Her laboratory is a secret room in the castle that appears well into the film, where it is revealed that she has discovered how to grow non-toxic spores using unpolluted water drawn from wells deep underground. The room is full of the fluffy orb-shaped spores, and is magical and peaceful, a representation of Nausicaä’s determined hope for the future.
