‘Howl’ is based on the character of Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle, a wizard who can transform into a giant reptilian bird. On his face and around his claws are scales, which then gradually change into feathers. Howl’s alter ego is quite violent, and the piece is designed to reflect that – it looks like it has been thrown at the head. The stingray leather gives way to small sequins, then larger sequins, and then feathers and plastic spikes; this also helps to enhance the sense of movement as well. The sequins and the stingray are shiny and glittery to add that aura of magic that surround Miyazaki’s works.
